General discussion • long term use of Pi5 for surveillance on farmland

Hello Raspberry Pi community,

I'm planning an experiment using Raspberry Pi 5s with camera modules to monitor bee hive activity in different types of farmland. The setup will involve monitoring 15 to 30 hives, each visited only once a week. I aim to use motion detection and video recording software based on OpenCV at the hive entrances.

The hives will be in the field for 3 months, so the setup needs to be portable but not tiny. I need a cost-effective solution to power at least 15 Raspberry Pi 5s continuously for a week. Each Pi is estimated to require a 5V 5A power source.

I'm considering using batteries housed in waterproof boxes, but I'm unsure about the best approach for this power requirement. Has anyone powered a Pi 5 for several days or used solar-powered batteries for a similar setup?

Thanks for any advice or solutions!
