Ok folks I opening this topic because I wonder if any of you run into the following issue:
I had many Raspberry PI 2-3-4 setups where a regular mechanical external hdd was hooked up on the PI eg: WD Passport, Seagate backup whatnot.
These mini HDDs don't have additional power connector they just using the USB port for power as well.
This worked very well up until the Raspberry PI 5 for me by just powering the PIs from a 5V@10A power supply through the GPIO, more than enough power for them...
With the PI5 game is changed, this thing no longer want to recognize a plugged in mini HDD at boot if I power the PI from the GPIO as I used to. After boot if I replug the HDD it shows up, this is unacceptable as I won't be on the same location as the PI. The HDD only works if I use the original USBc power adapter coming with the PI (what I not intend to).
I looking for some solution for this like:
- Use nVme instead (expensive, heating up, don't really need extra speed)
Use SATA external drive instead
Use an USB hub in between the pi and drive
