I have a simple box fan that has a power dial. It's old-style, but apparently not old enough.
It has 4 settings where you twist the dial from "Off" to "1", "2" or "3". Do these fans come with a simple switch that just directs the power from one wire to three different wires and there's resistors in the motor housing, or is the switch a special potentiometer that just has three settings that go to a simple motor?
I want the RPi to control the fan, but I don't know if I should use 3 RPi controlled relays, or, if I might need to use a motor controller that I connect straight to the AC fan motor.
Is there a standard for box fans on how they're made? The wire from the switch to the motor is round so there's no way to tell if it's just one or 3 wires inside. Likewise, the motor housing is enclosed so there's no way to tell what's in there. There aren't even any screws to open these up. I think they might be glued shut, but, there isn't even a visible seam.
Does anyone have any insight on what it takes to hook up an AC box fan to an RPi? I know this is pretty darn vague, but any information will help.
