I recently purchased a Raspberry Pi 4B (from Adafruit) and have been troubleshooting an issue with booting Raspberry Pi OS Lite 64‑bit. When I install the 64‑bit image, the Pi doesn’t boot as expected – I see a green LED flash in a pattern that doesn’t match any documented codes (it gives 2 long flashes followed by many (way more than 10) short flashes until the green light eventually goes off).
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
1. 64‑bit Image via Official Imager (v.1.8.5):
I used the official Raspberry Pi Imager to flash the 64‑bit Pi OS Lite image onto multiple SD cards. Each time, the Pi fails to boot correctly.
2. No Peripherals Test:
When booting with nothing attached, the green LED remains steadily on, which suggests the Pi is powered properly.
3. Bootloader Update:
I attempted to update/reinstall the bootloader. During the update process, the green LED flashed in a regular interval for hours until I powered it off. Afterward, I tried booting the 64‑bit image again, but the same LED pattern appeared.
4. Desktop Image Test:
I also tried flashing the standard (desktop) Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit image. In that case, the green LED flashed at a regular interval and I even got a monitor output (a “press next” prompt), though I didn’t proceed further due to a lack of keyboard/mouse.
5. 32‑bit Image Test:
As a workaround, I installed the 32‑bit version of Pi OS Lite. This image boots fine and the green LED flashes in the expected “heartbeat” pattern, with the system accessible (via SSH/monitor).
Since I plan to use this Pi to fully leverage its 8 GB of RAM, I’d like to run a 64‑bit OS. Does anyone know why the 64‑bit image might be failing to boot on my unit? Are there known firmware or bootloader compatibility issues with the current 64‑bit Pi OS Lite image on the Pi 4B?
