Hello,

I've been testing XMPP clients for the Raspberry Pi. When it comes to Multi-User chat, Gajim is the best for the Raspberry Pi.

Note: For XMPP Video/Audio calls, use Dino instead.

The default version of Gajim (that comes with Debian bookworm) is 1.7.3. That's too old a version to install today, trust me. The newest version of Gajim is currently 1.9.5, and will be in Debian Trixie. There is a flatpak of 1.9.5 available, but the Gajim project themselves recently warned not to use it: there are unresolved issues with this flatpak.

So what's the best, easiest installation method of Gajim on the Raspberry Pi, today? There is a "backport" of Gajim for Debian bookworm. That version is 1.8.4, which is much more modern than 1.7.3.

Gajim 1.8.4 can be simply installed after following these instructions for enabling backports for bookworm:

"Installing Debian Backports on Raspberry Pi":
https://www.complete.org/installing-deb ... pberry-pi/:

Then 1.8.4 is simply installed with:

Code:

sudo apt install gajim
Once installed, you might want to create a free XMPP account on any of the following "Category A"-rated servers listed here:
https://providers.xmpp.net/

Note: All those servers are federated together (similar to how all email servers and Mastodon servers are federated), so an account on any of them gives you access to "Group Chats" on any XMPP server in the federation. You might want to choose a server with a low ping-latency, from your location.

If you care about preserving the sovereignty and independence of the more tight-knit groups you are part of, it might be time to take a fresh look at XMPP! ;) OMEMO E2E encryption is possible on any "Private" Group Chat that you might create!
