I use an AC adapter that can be set from 3 to 12V and I set it to 5V for every pi I've ever owned.
I just bought a new pi 3 A+ because one that I had available wouldn't boot when connected to the AC adapter set at 5V. I found that the brand new pi3 A+ also wouldn't boot up when using the adapter. However, I knew that I'd booted up the first/older one before when I got it a couple of years ago and figured I powered it from a USB hub for a quick test, so when I connected both Pis this way, they worked. They also worked when I used a
USB phone adapter, but they still wouldn't work with my AC adapter until I set its voltage to 6V but posts elsewhere on this forum suggest that I risk damaging my pis.
