This was previously discussed at viewtopic.php?p=2146180&hilit=dacberry#p2146180 but 12 months later the problem is still arising.
I bought a dacberry400 from SB Components (sb-components.co.uk) and tried to use it with a Pi400 on 6.8 kernel. The manufacturer's install script initially failed because it was directing to /boot/config.txt not /boot/firmware/config.txt but once that was corrected the kernel modules loaded correctly. But despite this ALSA couldn't by any means select the DAC as an output.
I reached out to the manufacturer on their message board, and got an email acknowledgement, and they promptly deleted the post: it's not there anymore.
So then I asked SB Components for support - and they didn't reply. I've now posted the dacberry400s back to them under the distance selling regulations and am waiting for a refund. But when they haven't replied to any messages I'm not overly hopeful.
I instead went to Pi-Hut (who had stopped selling the dacberry400) and bought one of these https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/audi ... 3184965715 and a a Flat HAT Hacker. This works.
I found it confusing with there being no instructions or diagrams packed with the boards, 4 different potential ways round the pins could be oriented, and the Pimoroni website's product photos all being for different or more recent product lines. Pimoroni's install script also targeted the wrong location of config.txt and there wasn't the forum advice on that, except that I'd seen about it for the dacberry400. But it does work. So all is resolved. If I may say, it seems to me there is an unfortunate conflation of peripherals and components - someone wanting a 3.5mm jack doesn't necessarily want to find out about GPIO header pins.
