General discussion • Help with speed of mathematical calculations

Hello All,

I work on solving mathematical problems. C++, Jupyter Notebook, Python mostly.

I recently bought a Pi 500 and I am finding it painfully slow compared to even my 12 year old Thinkpad T40 with 32gb RAM and an SSD. I also have an M1 MacBook Pro, 8gb, 256gb SSD.

I spend a lot of time at a Buddhist monastery working towards being ready for ordination. I bought the Pi 500 for portability and low power consumption. I don't know where I will end up but I want to continue my math wherever go. If I have to resort to pen and paper I can, but it would be nice to have a machine with me.

I contacted CanaKit to talk about my troubles and they suggested:
2. We have personally not tried mathematical calculations on the device and unsure of that particular use case, but the Pi 500 is similar to the PI 5 in performance characteristics. I am not sure if additional RAM of the PI 5 might help in calculations (since the PI 5 comes with up to 8GB) or if that is something that is CPU or software limited, or possibly if using a high speed SSD such as this device that has a built in SSD which proides multiple times faster data read/write speeds on the Pi 5 may help (https://www.canakit.com/canakit-raspber ... h-ssd.html). I would suggest to reach out to manufacturer (Raspberry Pi) as they have excellent community support (https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/) and official RPi forum moderators and engineers that may have guidance or feedback as well.

I need to remain portable and keep low power consumption.

Can anyone help me identify a solution?
