Troubleshooting • PI 5 disk to disk file move slow and processor hot!

Raspberry Pi 5 with 8 GB. Pi OS latest with all updates. Moving files from one USB SSD to another USB SSD. The process is slowwww. :( The Pi 5 processor is incredibly hot.

I am moving lots of GB from a small SSD to a bigger SSD. Something I do regularly on an Intel notebook and a Pi 4. Open Nemo, one disk in the left pane and the other disk on the right pane. The Pi 4 is very slow as both USB ports share the bandwidth. Still, time is not that important if I can leave it running and walk away for a few hours. The Pi 4 does not heat up to any extreme.

Today I started a move on my notebook and it estimated 2 hours. I decided to move the move to my new Pi 5 8GB with the official power supply and the latest OS downloaded a couple of days ago. It should be faster than the Pi 4 with double the USB bandwidth. Instead the Pi OS file manager estimated 12 hours and the CPU temp went through the roof.

I used a Pi 5 with a big heatsink instead of a fan. The heatsink was soon too hot to touch. The target SSD should be the hot bit from all the writes but that SSD stayed down at just warm due to the writes being so slow.

What sort of diagnostics should I use if I test the next big move on a Pi 5?
