Interfacing (DSI, CSI, I2C, etc.) • GPIO pins and volts question

For my project, I need to connect a cable from my device to the +5 volt pin on my rpi, and then use a regulator to drop the +5 volt down to the 3.3 volt the device in question needs. Can't I just connect the cable directly to the +3.3 volt pin on my pi?
Any help will be appreciated.
