I am brand new at Raspberry Pi and really struggled to get the OS loaded and connecting (headless) to my MacBook, but it finally worked. I know the pi is connected to the internet and laptop, because I was finally able to ping it from the command line and successfully sign in on the VNC viewer using the IP address, and start a session, but it just came up with a blank gray screen. All the tutorials showed that it should pop up showing a desktop setup. I tried again on my PC, and again successfully started a session in the VNC viewer, only to be met with the same blank screen. I've attached screenshots of what I am seeing--please let me know if you need me to post anymore info to help troubleshoot. I'm not really sure what is relevant information to fix this issue. Thanks in advance for your help. (Only attached screenshots from my mac, but it looks exactly the same on PC)
