Hello, my last work with pi's was ~2018-19 so I saw myself to the beginner section
I have a mechanical background, had my circuits/coding knowledge is spotty at best, but wanted to learn since all the kart tracks are now covered in snow!
I have a Pi 3 that I would like to use on my go kart for some telemetry. Telemetry is a generous term for now, and for now I would like RPM, GPS location, and wheel speed sensor. I have seen a plethora of posts on the topic of "pi for automotive data" and have mostly sorted how I would like to get the data mentioned. However, I am not sure what hardware I would need to make this happen, and any clarification on this would be awesome.
RPM: I would like to wrap a little wire around the spark plug wire, and sense the pulse that way (similar to lawnmower, etc). It seems like this can be done via the GPIO, but is it advisable to use an optoisolator HAT like this?

I am already working with a buddy on a circuit that will clean the signal, and may put an optoisolator there. Not sure yet which would have more benefit.
GPS location: I think I will use the Adafruit Ultimate GPS HAT for Raspberry Pi for this. I am not sure of the accuracy, but this seems a good place to start. As will all projects, I expect this would be a potential upgrade once I understand more about the system.
Wheel Speed: I will make my own steel collar for the rear axle and mount a hall effect sensor. The question here is do i need a hat to take in/clean this signal or can I go directly to GPIO?
There are other considerations not listed here that I am working on as well, but I wanted to ask a bit of guidance in sifting thru the many HAT options for sensors and inputs. Thank you in advance.
