General discussion • Pi Zero 2 W USB Boot

Hi,

I'm quite new to raspberry pi, i have 3 pi 0 2w units which i boot from sdcard, running headless running raspberry pi os 64bit lite.
I wanted to "upgrade" one of the units and change the boot drive from sdcard to usb-ssd.
I've verified the below (which i assume set correctly out of the gate)
vcgencmd otp_dump | grep 17:
17:3020008a
I've duplicate the sdcard to the usb using dd.
problem i'm facing is that when i try to boot from the usb (i've removed the sdcard) it boots succesfully maybe 1/10 tries each time.

sometimes i get the rainbow splash screen and then a black screen
sometimes it goes into black screen only
and rarely it suddenly boots just fine.

the green led light it turning on each time.

if i boot the pi from the sdcard and connect the usb drive it always recognize the drive without any issues (so i assume this eliminate insufficient power).

I've tried also to format sdcard in fat32 and put bootcode.bin
I've enabled the OTP that it should wait for the usb device to start
from my research both of the above is not required for pi 0 2w but i tried it anyway

yet issue persist.

any ideas would be appreciated :)
