Troubleshooting • no prior Pi experience & can't stop killing SD cards

I'm trying to build a network-wide Pi-hole ad blocker. I'm using a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with 1GB of RAM and the official USB-C power supply. I've burned through four microSDs—they've all at some point suddenly stopped being usable by the Pi, and my PC also no longer reads them. (Some of them will bring up an error message but will always fail to format.)

Here's what I've been doing:
1. Install the OS onto the microSD using the official imager. I've never had any problems with this step.

2. Insert the card and power up the Pi.

3. Set up Raspberry Pi Connect.

4. Safely shut down the Pi before unplugging the power so I can take it from the room with my monitor to my room with the router.

5. Hook up the Pi to my router via LAN before giving it power again. Sometimes this is when the card fails, other times I can continue working with zero problems.

6. Use Raspberry Pi Connect to install Pi-hole. Twice I successfully got everything up and running for some time, but eventually everything would fail.

I doubt my microSDs have been the problem because each one I've tried has been one recommended by people online who (I assume) know much more about these things than me. At this point I'm convinced I'm either doing something stupidly wrong or my Pi is busted. Any help or insight would be extremely appreciated.
