I am not an electriction and I don't really know what I'm doing. But I want to be careful, that is why I'm asking for help. Normally you would tell me to stay away from mains but I am being very careful.
I want to build a smart device that will turn off cartoons for my son on my computer. I want this to be Google Voice assistant activated. So when I say "Ok Google, turn off cartoons" then a custom script will be run on my computer to do the job. I am a programmer not an electriction. So, since Google Home does not support running webhooks, but it does allow me to turn a smart socket on/off, I decided that I can use the "turn off cartoons" command to turn on my smart plug. The smart plug will be connected to my Raspberry PI GIO pins and when the smart plug turns on then I can detect it in software and perform whatever operation I want (like turning off cartoons).
I have a couple of ideas how I might connect my Raspberry PI to 220v smart socket but would like to hear your thoughts on which was is the best for a beginner like me.
1) I could use a phone charger which steps down the voltage from 220V to 5V which should be much safer to work with. At this point I just need to figure out how to go from 5V to 3.3V.
2) I thought I could use a 3.3V power supply, the one I found on Amazon like this one and wondering if it is a good idea or not - https://www.amazon.co.uk/AZDelivery-Sup ... atf_d&th=1
Are any of those 2 ideas good to try? Which one is better? Is there a better / safer way to do this?
Here is a little illustration picture of what I have in mind:
