Automation, sensing and robotics • BLE counter based on authorised Tags

Hi,

I work for a company that runs small events. We are looking for a way to count how many people attend each stand and the event in general. One of the things we do is supply everyone that comes into the event with a lanyard and name tag.

I have been looking at BLE stickers that we could stick onto each name tag / lanyard and cheap BLE tags readily available from Aliexpress. My idea being we could pair / authorise each sticker or tag to a BLE receiver, i.e. RPI. There could be an RPI at each stand and the main door way and that then counts every BLE sticker that comes within range.

I am only interested in BLE stickers or tags that are authorised to my system, i'm not interested in mobile devices due to randomization issues.

Does anyone know of any systems that already do this so i could field test the theory as a proof of concept. Failing that i could develop something, i looked into a package called BlueZ which manages BLE but not sure where to go with being able to authorise tags to the receivers and then note when they are within range.

I'm assuming there must be something similar already available as its the same way an automation system would work... RPI BT receiver.. Authorised Tag.. when in range do.... something.. switch on a light, open a gate type of thing... the main difference with me is instead of open gate i just want to note the time the tag was seen
