Other RP2040 boards • Custom RP2040 Board Not Detected

Hi all,

I designed this custom RP2040 board, sticking pretty closely to the published “minimal design example”. I used the same models of crystal, flash chip, and voltage regulator. I have attached pictures of the schematic and board layout.

The only intentional material change was to swap the micro-USB port for a USB Type-C port. I did not connect the CC lines, but I understand that this should not matter if using a USB-C to USB-A cable (which I am) since those don’t map to a 4-pin USB-A anyway.

An unintentional change was that I accidentally ordered 5V regulators instead of 3.3V. I have desoldered these and connected the 3V3 line directly to an external power supply. This means the USB power is decoupled from the board; I don’t know if that’s significant. Both the USB ground and external supply ground are connected to the PCB ground plane.

Unfortunately, my computer does not recognise the board at all. Nothing pops up in lsusb, no mass storage device, nothing. This happens regardless of the order of connecting power vs USB, and whether or not I hold down the bootsel button at any point.

I am inexperienced in PCB routing, so it could of course be that.

I would be grateful for any help or advice.

Thanks all!
