Networking and servers • Can an older RPi3B be used as a bluetooth repeater/extender?

Hi,

Pretty good a tech, but bluetooth is somewhat out of my wheelhouse. So my terminology and idea of what's possible might be off.

I was thinking since i've got my old Rpi 3B (iirc) sitting around, and a need to repeat a bluetooth signal, i could possibly set my RPi up as a sort of repeater? I need to maintain a connection between my android phone and an external bluetooth speaker. It's a cheap speaker, so don't expect anything beyond Bluetooth 4.0

I am using an app to output an alarm to the speaker. And the connection needs to be maintained so the speaker does not turn off (unless there's some power of Bluetooth i don't know about?). I want to have the speaker farther way from the phone.

Strictly speaking, i don't think the signal needs to go both ways, just Android phone to speaker? But i would like it to go both ways for other devices/systems - if it can be used as a repeater to capture and resent the signal both ways.

In my mind this system once setup, just needs to sit unattended - no display - in a place between the devices, running automatically whenever the Rpi boots up when connected to power. Capturing and sending bluetooth signals both ways - if possible.

Any advice on what i need to do to achieve this? Thanks
